Alex Haller, ATR-P

We’re excited to introduce Alex Haller, ATR-P, Resident in Counseling, as the newest member of the Family & Child Therapy team in Vienna, Virginia. With a strong commitment to creative, compassionate care, Alex brings a unique blend of clinical training and lived experience to support children, teens, adults, and families through art-based therapeutic approaches.

🎨 Who Is Alex Haller?

Alex is a Provisional Art Therapist (ATR-P) and Resident in Counseling who practices from a neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQIA+-affirming, trauma-informed framework. They center therapy around authenticity, creativity, and acceptance, helping clients show up as they are and grow at their own pace. With experience working with diverse populations — from children and teens struggling with big emotions to adults navigating identity, trauma, or life transitions — Alex combines traditional talk therapy with creative modalities such as art therapy and Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT).

🧠 What Makes Art Therapy Special?

Art therapy is a credentialed mental health profession that uses creative processes — like drawing, painting, or collage — to help clients explore emotions, build insight, and express things that may be hard to put into words. Trained art therapists like Alex are skilled in facilitating this process in ways that are meaningful and healing for each individual.

You don’t have to be good at art to benefit! The emphasis is on process over product and using creativity as a pathway to understanding, coping, and growth.

💛 Alex’s Therapeutic Approach

Alex’s work is rooted in holistic, person-centered care. They focus on helping clients:

  • Discover and build on inherent strengths

  • Develop effective coping strategies

  • Deepen self-awareness and resilience

  • Navigate identity exploration and life challenges

  • Express emotions that might feel overwhelming or hard to verbalize

Their approach honors the unique identity and lived experience of every client — especially those in neurodiverse and LGBTQIA+ communities.

👩‍🎓 Education & Professional Background

Alex holds a Master of Science in Art Therapy and Counseling and a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture + Extended Media, giving them both clinical knowledge and real-world creative insight. They hold professional affiliations with organizations that uphold high standards in counseling and art therapy practice.

🗓 Who Can Benefit from Art Therapy with Alex

Art therapy can support people of all ages and backgrounds, including:

  • Children & Teens — with emotional regulation, school stress, identity development

  • Adults — navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, or trauma

  • Families — strengthening communication through shared creative experiences

  • Neurodivergent individuals — providing sensory, expressive ways to process experience
